A study was conducted to isolate and identify Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) from biomaterials collected from ducks for a period of 12 years (2001 to 2012). Fifty three isolates of P. multocida were obtained from 424 samples collected and they were characterized using standard bacteriological procedures. All were found to be pathogenic for mice and the re-isolation of the organism was obtained from the internal organs of all the dead mice. Isolates obtained were tested using molecular diagnostic tools like P. multocida Polymerase Chain Reaction (PM-PCR) and was proved as an appropriate diagnostic tool for the rapid identification of the P. multocida. The isolates were biotyped using sugar fermentation test and variation was observed in the fermentation of sugars among the isolates. Among the fifty three isolates, fifty were biotyped as P. multocida sub sp. multocida, three were P. multocida sub sp. gallicida.
